Australian swimmer Madeline Groves to skip Olympics because of ‘misogynistic perverts in sport’

Swimmer Madeline Groves has decided she has had enough and will not compete in the Australian Olympic trials this summer.

Why? Apparently it’s because she’s dealt with “misogynistic perverts” in sports and doesn’t want to be exploited by them.

Groves initially made her Instagram announcement, but took to Twitter to call out to people who “shame the body or medically enlighten” young women and girls in swimming.

Groves, a two-time silver medalist for Australia, has presented complaints in recent months on Twitter. This included her discussion of promoting someone who “made her uncomfortable” in the way she looked at her in a swimsuit.

Around the same time, Groves mentioned a comment from a well-known trainer in a “scary” voice.

Groves would continue to call the behavior she experienced “a disgusting open secret in swimming”.

As such, the 26-year-old is not playing games to make a statement. And it’s understandable why.

Having said that, as she confirmed on Instagram, her career is not yet over and she plans to attend events later in the year.

Through Reuters, governing body Swimming Australia contacted Groves late last year after his initial comments on Twitter.

“Swimming Australia contacted Maddie in December 2020 to inquire about a tweet she sent that referred to potential abuse by someone related to swimming,” SA said in a statement. Maddie declined to provide further information and we have no previous recorded complaints from Maddie.

β€œAll allegations of child abuse or sexual misconduct are taken seriously by Swimming Australia.

“We consider the well-being, safety and well-being of children and young people to be paramount, and we have a duty to conduct investigations to uphold the standards of our sport.”
