Darnell Mooney: I smiled halfway through Justin Fields’ deep ball

Bears head coach Matt Nagy wasn’t the only one to Justin Champs‘performance in OTAs Wednesday.

Second year catcher Darnell mooney was impressed with how the rookie quarterback lets him rip, complimenting his deep-ball ability.

“I caught a ball or two deep from him,” Mooney said, via Stephanie Stremplewski of NBCSportsChicago.com. “The very first that he threw up at me I smiled halfway to just see the ball in the air and where it was placed. He is very precise with his ball and he understands exactly where he wants the ball to be.

It’s June, so players aren’t in the pads and quarterbacks aren’t facing a live pass rush. But Mooney still praised Fields’ arm and skill.

“That’s a nice ball, man,” Mooney said. “Sometimes he can get there at the right ball, but he wants it in front of you, and he’ll be frustrated on his own if he’s not there. He’s very hard on himself. He’s a great player, a great person too, and he’s going to have a good career.

Mooney was second to the Bears in receptions and yards as a rookie in 2020, capturing 61 passes for 631 yards with four touchdowns. If his chemistry with Fields continues to take off, Mooney’s production could see a significant jump every time Fields beat. Andy dalton to become Chicago QB1.
