Rudy Gobert was named the 2020-21 Defensive Player of the Year, the NBA announced on Wednesday. This is Gobert’s third defensive player of the year title. He already won the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons before losing the award against Giannis Antetokounmpo last season. By winning the award for the third time, Gobert has now equaled Dwight Howard for the third most defensive player of the year, behind Ben Wallace and Dikembe Mutombo, who each have four.

Gobert finished with 84 first-place votes, followed by Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers, who tallied 15.

by Gobert Jazz had the best track record of NBA this season at 52-20, and he was one of the main reasons why. The Jazz finished third in defense despite the lack of All-Defense-caliber teammates for their star center. That’s because Gobert’s rim protection is so powerful that Utah can afford to use the rest of their defenders to protect themselves against 3-point shots. Unsurprisingly, the Jazz awarded the third-less of them in the NBA.

Virtually every measure has portrayed Gobert as the best defensive player in the NBA. He led the NBA in aggregate with 190 blocks and was second in blocks per game behind Myles Turner. He also led the NBA in defensive rebounds. Opponents shot 7.7% less against him than against an average defender, and he finished third in the defensive standings at 100.9, behind his teammates. Mike Conley and Georges niang, who took advantage of his presence. Among the advanced measures, Gobert dominated the NBA in defensive winning shares, all forms of FiveThirtyEight RAPTOR defensive metrics and ESPN’s real plus-minus defensive.

The real test for Gobert will come in the playoffs. Big cover men tend to fight teams with enough shots to get them out of the basket, and now that Gobert has proven all he can prove in the regular season, his merits as an all-time defenseman will be. judged by what happens in the playoffs. He’s playing the best basketball of his career this season, and this award is a good starting point for his most important playoff run to date.
