MANILA, Philippines — The University of Santo Tomas secured the hiring of young Gilas member, Jordi Gomez de Liaño, ahead of season 84 of the UAA.

The Varsitarian, the school’s official student publication, reported the development on Thursday.

De Liaño, the younger brother of Juan and Javi of the University of the Philippines, had a strong personal campaign for the Junior Maroons despite going 1-13 in season 82.

The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 13 points with 4.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his last season with UP Integrated School.

De Liaño was supposed to dress Gilas Pilipinas’ youth during the 2019 Fiba Asian Under-16 Championship in Beirut, Lebanon, but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Growling Tigers seek to recover from fallout from Sorsogon fiasco that saw the lead go trainer Aldin Ayyo and key players CJ Cansino and Mark Nonoy.

Reigning MVP Soulemane Chabi Yo will still lead the Growling Tigers alongside Sherwin Concepcion and Dave Ando.

De Liaño will join new recruits Rom Junsay from Arellano, Johnsherick Estrada from St. Clare College of Caloocan and Nikko Panganiban from Our Lady of Fatima University.
