49ers lose 1 week of rookie development for rule violation

San Francisco 49ers Wednesday Voluntarily shorten their offseason program. On Thursday, it was further reduced due to a violation of NFL coaching rules according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.

The 49ers report by Pelissero will not be allowed to do a rookie development week due to a video that surfaced on social networks from the rookie minicamp which indicated that San Francisco was not following the offseason training rules. This video showed some contact between two players when contact during this time is not allowed.

This is entirely separate from the team’s cancellation of the last two OTAs and the mandatory minicamp. Shanahan at a press conference on Wednesday said the team had been planning to cut the offseason schedule short for a number of reasons.

What was eliminated by the league was a week of rookie development that was unrelated to football. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area called the development in a tweet “non-football and life skills.”

The 49ers rookies who stayed behind will likely return home and return for training camp in late July.
