The Diamondbacks have announced that executive vice president and general manager Mike Hazen is taking “physical leave” from the team. Assistant General Manager Amiel Sawdaye will take charge of baseball’s day-to-day operations, with Hazen consulting regularly.
Sawdaye was one of Hazen’s main lieutenants throughout their tenure in Arizona. The couple worked together at the Red Sox front office, and Sawdaye followed Hazen into the wilderness less than two weeks after the latter was hired as the Diamondbacks general manager. Sawdaye has long been seen as a potential future GM, and he was among the finalists for the Angels job that went to Perry Minasian last winter.
Hazen’s wife Nicole battles brain cancer notes Nick Piecoro from the Republic of Arizona. The team has not clarified if this is the reason Hazen has stepped away from day-to-day operations at this time. No planned timeline for his return has been provided, although there will likely be more updates from the organization in the near future. MLBTR sends our best wishes to the Hazen family.
