MANILA, Philippines — Jayson Macaalay’s hopes in Tokyo were dashed after his loss to Azerbaijani Firdovsi Farzaliyev, 1-0, in the round of 16 of the Kumite Men -67 kg division at the World Olympic Karate Qualifying Tournament in Paris Friday.

It was a disappointing race for Macaalay, who only lasted two matches in Paris.

Macaalay, bronze medalist at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, had a strong start to the tournament, sending Omar Laattar of the Netherlands 2-0.

Farzaliyev, however, took the lead in the rally ensuring this vital point late in the game.

Junna Tsukii, Jamie Lim, Joane Orbon, Ivan Agustin, Shariff Afif, Alwyn Batican, John Enrico Vasquez and Sarah Pangilinan are still in contention for the Olympic places and they must clinch a podium in Paris to qualify for Tokyo.
