Addis Ababa, 29 June / 2021 – The Amhara branch of the ruling Prosperity Party warned the Tigray forces led by the Tigray Defense Forces that “no Amhara will not pay the price” if there are attempts to “illegally” take over areas in western Tigray.
Amhara regional state seized several parts of western Tigray, resulting in the US Secretary of State describing events there as “ethnic cleansing”.
The Amhara people are never ready for revenge. But this does not mean that they are impatient with those who say, “We will decide the outcome,” The statement said, accusing Tigran’s forces of trying to settle scores.
“We repeat that Wolkite, Tegide, Telmt and Raya are regions in Amhara that the Amhara have liberated through their sacrifices.”
“We reaffirm that Wolkite, Tegide, Telmt and Raya are areas in Amhara that have been liberated by Amhara through their sacrifices. We want to reassure you time and time again that if there is a desire to take these areas illegally, there is no Amhara who will not pay the price for their freedom.”
The statement came shortly after Reuters reported Getachew Reda as saying: “Our primary focus is to weaken the enemy’s combat capabilities…so if going to Amhara is what it takes, we will do that, and if going to Eritrea is what it takes, We will do that.”
On June 28, the federal government said it had accepted a unilateral ceasefire request made by the Tigray Interim Administration. The announcement came shortly after reports emerged that forces previously loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front had captured the city of Mekele, which has since renamed itself the Tigray Defense Forces. Late afternoon news reports indicate that the Tigrayan forces have taken control of the city of Shire in the northern part of Tigray, accusing the Eritrean Defense Forces that were supporting the Ethiopian Defense Forces in the Tigray War of committing serious atrocities.
