MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas’ recent success in the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers left no guarantees, not even the head coach position currently held by Tab Baldwin.
Baldwin led the Philippines swept away in the playoffs to Clark highlighted by a pair of mind-blowing victories from longtime rival South Korea.
The impressive turnout led to more clamor for the Kiwi-American tactician to take on the role of Gilas’ full-time mentor.
But that won’t be the case, at least not yet, with Baldwin, who is also Gilas’ program director, looking to further assess his performance and that of his team after the Olympic qualifying tournament in Serbia.
“It’s a program, and again, it’s fluid. There will be decisions pending on what we think SBP, myself, Coach Ryan (Gregorio), what we think is best for the program, ”Baldwin said on sports show The Chasedown. “So nothing is set in stone. No one is entitled to any of these positions.
“Everyone should know that at any time, if someone better shows up, they’ll be where you are sitting today. And I think it helps us perform better every day, ”said Baldwin, Gilas’ third coach in as many Fiba Asia Cup qualifying windows after Mark Dickel and Jong Uichico.
Gilas faces stiff competition in the OQT against powerful Serbia on Thursday and the Dominican Republic on Friday.
