Kanu went missing when he failed to appear in court in 2015 and his whereabouts prior to his arrest were not known. Officials did not reveal where he was detained.
“He has been returned to Nigeria to continue his trial after his disappearance while on bail in connection with the 11 counts against him,” Mallami said.
Kano was arrested on Sunday, June 27, 2021.
Mallami said Kanu was initially arrested on October 14, 2015 on 11 counts of terrorism, felony treason, running an illegal community, spreading defamatory material, illegal possession of firearms, and improper import of goods, among other things.
He is accused of engaging in subversive activities including incitement to violence through television, radio and electronic broadcasts against Nigeria, the Nigerian state and institutions.
Mallami said Kano is also accused of inciting violence, particularly in southeastern Nigeria, which has resulted in loss of life and property among civilians, military, paramilitary and police forces, and destruction of civil institutions and symbols of the authorities.
“Namdi Kanu was brought before the court today – Court No. 2, Federal Supreme Court. He will be returned (to court) on the 27th of next month,” Nigerian Attorney General Omar Gwando told CNN.
