Two dead and five injured in a serious accident in SH5

Two people were killed and five others injured in a crash on State Highway 5, Bwitapu, south of Rotorua.

Three rescue helicopters were sent to the crash, and the road was closed while police were examining the scene.

A police spokeswoman said this morning that the road has since reopened.

A spokeswoman said that the five wounded ranged from critical to minor.

There were two people in one vehicle and five in the other.

Emergency services were alerted to the accident between Wackett Valley Road and
Waikaremwana Road around 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

The spokeswoman said firefighters and ambulance workers were also at the scene. Rescue helicopters were sent from Tauranga and Topo.

A serious collision unit was also sent to the scene of the accident.

SH5 was blocked in both directions and diversions were performed.

Meanwhile, a person was seriously injured in a plane crash at Haumoana in Hawk’s Bay.

The collision occurred between two vehicles near the intersection of Haumoana Road and
Parkhill Road about 7.45 p.m. Tuesday.

One person was seriously injured and another moderately injured.
