Best ice cream: Jeni’s splendid ice creams
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams has developed a rabid cult of ice cream fans across the country in the years since Jeni Britton Bauer opened Jeni’s first location in Columbus, Ohio in 2002. While Houstonians could order pints of ice cream Since the team began shipping out of state in 2006, the highly-enthusiastic dessert place didn’t have a permanent presence in H-Town until January 2020, when Jeni settled on 19th Street in The Heights. Since then, Jeni’s has firmly established itself in the upper echelons of the Houston ice cream scene with its delicious delicacies. Made with a smooth, heavenly buttercream body (save for a handful of dairy-free options) with no original synthetic ingredients, each ice cream’s flawless texture may be the first thing you notice in that initial bite, but it’s the wildly creative list and ever-changing classic and innovative flavors that really sets Jeni apart.
Classic flavors include the marmalade and crunchy Brambleberry Crisp, the indulgent salty peanut butter with chocolate flecks, and the sinfully decadent sticky butter cake. Jeni’s has been known to add even wilder flavors to the mix – tart and tangy goat cheese with red cherries is one of the coolest pairings we’ve come across, and the wildest mix Jeni’s has made was for a limited time only All Flavor to bagel. Released just before New Year’s Eve in late 2020 and gone in an instant, its cream cheese-flavored sweet base paired exceptionally well with the buttery, salty, and garlic-sprinkled streusel chunks everywhere. We hope it returns in the future, although until then, we’ll be more than happy to stick with the standout classic flavors that put Jeni’s on the map in the first place.
