Bruno Fernandes’ biggest mistake could be a problem under Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United – Omar Garrick

Bruno Fernandes is arguably Manchester United’s most influential player since signing for the club in January 2020, but he faces a major challenge under Ralf Rangnick.

He remains one of my favorite players at Old Trafford and without him United would be in a much worse position – maybe not even competing in the Champions League.

Last season he was United’s most prolific player, both in front of goal and on the assist front.

In total, he scored 28 goals and provided 21 assists in 58 games, bordering on Frank Lampard’s number when measured by the number of goals scored by a midfielder.

Undoubtedly Fernandes was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most important asset and he definitely fits the type of player United should always be watching, but he is about to enter his toughest stint at Old Trafford.

There is no doubt that there has been a small drop – not a huge one.

This season he has scored four goals in 18 games but provided nine assists, which is impressive. However, he has not put the ball in the net since September and that is undoubtedly a bit of concern, especially as he is seen as the club’s talisman.

The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo has certainly had an impact on his performance levels as his role has changed. While he drifted forward in the 18-yard area last season, like a false nine, this season he had to sit back and try to find his teammate in the penalty area.

But perhaps Fernandes’ biggest mistake this season has been his pressure.

27-year-old Fernandes has hit his lowest pressing stats since signing for United and despite being a focal point in the team, he is a player who influences others around him. He is so important!

In the 2019/20 season Fernandes averaged 19.7 pressures per 90 and last season this improved at a rate of 20.7 per 90. However, in the current season he averages 18 pressures per 90 – a slight decrease that was evident in spell.

Do you remember Manchester City’s first goal in the derby? Fernandes tried to knock out his fellow Portugal international, Joao Cancelo, but failed to get close to his marker and as a result ran right past him to cross the ball, which Eric Bailly caught in his own net. deviated.

Now that Rangnick becomes United’s interim coach, he is a man regarded as the ‘godfather’ of German football. Jurgen Klopp has said he is the ‘best German coach’ and if it weren’t for him the philosophy of ‘Gegenpressing’ might be nothing.

In a conference Rangnick did with The Coaches Voice, he was asked to explain his philosophy, explaining that you can’t squeeze ‘a little’;

He said: “You have to be aware of what kind of football you really want to play? I’m not talking a little bit of this, a little bit of that, maybe a little bit of that, a little bit urgent.

“I mean, come on, what’s a little pushing? A little pushing is like a little pregnant. Whether you are pregnant or not. Whether you want to play press or not. But please, don’t push a little.”

Obviously there are other United players who are much worse at pressure than Fernandes and who need to change their ways, but it is clear United’s talisman has had a dip this season and he will be this part of his game. have to improve.

It is also important to highlight Fernandes as he has been United’s most important player for the past two years and fans want to see him shine under Rangnick’s regime. This was one area that was missing this season, but this will only get better under the German.

Definitely exciting times for United and if Fernandes improves on this element in his game it could be special.
