DeBlasio vs. Education Excellence: NYC Schools Go to Lowest Common Denominator

Earlier this month, as it attempted to sell the city through sweeping reform, the Department of Education invited families from Manhattan’s District 2 to learn more about Mayor de Blasio’s gifted and talented replacement, Brilliant NYC. We were told we would help ‘co-create’ programs to serve the city’s precocious young students. Manhattan Executive Superintendent Marisol Rosales presented the blueprint for the plan, saying that starting next year, the city will train all 4,000 kindergarten teachers to provide an accelerated instructional model to 65,000 incoming preschoolers. Families in my district were skeptical, and I don’t blame them.
