Effie Kats: Fashion Designers’ Journey to Real Estate

From living above her shop in Chapel St to harnessing her creative talents in a renovation of a dilapidated Edwardian – and Beverly Hills – this is Effie Kats’ journey.

Effie Kats is a Melbourne fashion designer who makes custom evening wear and suits with her namesake label.

Her designs have been featured at Melbourne Fashion Festival and have been worn by celebrities such as Kelly Rowland, Dannii Minogue, Carrie Bickmore, DJ Havana Brown and Tayla Damir.

FIRST HOME

When I first moved out I lived above my shop Zachary The Label in Chapel St. It needed some work and we reupholstered it. I could keep an eye on my staff that way too, but it was a great location with such close access to bars, restaurants and nightlife. I have many fond memories of being there in the hustle and bustle of everything. It was the perfect place to be in the prime of my twenties.

CURRENT HOUSING

We recently bought a three bedroom house in Malvern. It’s definitely a bit of a fixer-upper.

I’m really looking forward to sinking my teeth into the renovation and this is a very different creative outlet for me. We love herringbone floors, so we want to do that and keep the original details in the ceiling, which are really beautiful. We intend to bring out the natural character.

DREAM HOUSE

It should be in Beverly Hills. I love LA and I used to travel there for work so give me a mansion there everyday. It would probably be a very modern, minimalistic house style. I like the architecture of the concrete slabs, with a tennis court, a swimming pool and a nice cactus garden. I would convert an entire room into a walk-in closet and a full-length mirror too.
