Officer shot, hospitalized when gunfire erupted near South Los Angeles police station

An investigation is underway after a police officer was shot near a police station in Los Angeles’ historic South-Central neighborhood Thursday morning.

The shooting was reported shortly after 5 a.m. near the East 34 intersectionth Street and South Central Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Lizeth Lomeli said.

The officer was conscious and breathing as he was transported to a local hospital after the shooting, Lomeli said.

Police established a large perimeter around the area during the search for the gunman.

The alleged shooter has been detained, Lomeli said.
