A Westchester County mom has much to be thankful for: She was able to celebrate her daughter’s first birthday after she nearly died in an accident over the summer.
The mother-daughter duo faced a harrowing ordeal – captured on surveillance camera – that took place on Lake Avenue when a car crashed into them, driving them into a barbershop and trapping them under the vehicle.
Yonkers police officers sprang into action and, with the help of three Good Samaritans, lifted the car off them.
For the first time since July, the men have been reunited with the baby and her mother.
An agent who helped the family read a statement on their behalf.
“The past four months have been incredibly tough, but Leslie and I continue to do better and get stronger every day,” Officer Lorraine Fata said on behalf of the family.
“They have a long way to go to recover, but they are doing great,” said Officer Rocco Fusco. “Something to be thankful for. Just glad we were close and could help.”
One of the Good Samaritans who came to the rescue said he was amazed at their recovery.
“I never thought they wouldn’t be what they are today in a million years,” said Michael Larusso.
The driver has been charged with aggravated assault with a car. He faces up to 15 years behind bars if convicted in a few months.
